The Indonesian currency is called Rupiah and the international code for
their currency is IDR. If you want to exchange money in Bali, you will get the best exchange
rate by using American Dollar (USD). A USD100 bill gives you a better rate than smaller
denominations and cash dollars will fetch a higher rate than traveller's cheques. The best
rate is given for the new USD100 bills. It is also important to be aware of the following:
All dollar bills must be clean and fresh; you will not be able to change bills that are dirty,
marked or stained in any way. American dollar issued 1996 are not usually accepted as it is one
of the most counterfeited dollar bills circulating.
The exchange rate is usually lower at the airport than in the city (Kuta, Denpasar, Sanur,
Nusa Dua, Ubud).
IMPORTANT NOTICE!
Please choose your place of changing money with care - there are a number of so called Money
Changer who are known to cheat in different manners when exchanging your currency. If they offer
unusually high rates that is a sign for you to be especially aware; either they may charge you
a high commission or they might actually short-change you by large sums. Ask your guide for a
recommended service or change at a bank or your hotel (both these offer lower rates but are
considered safe). The telecommunication office called WARTEL usually offers good and safe service.
